WXXP REUNION RETURNS TO MR. SMALLS FOR TWO-NIGHT THANKSGIVING WEEKEND CELEBRATION
Nearly 40 years later, Pittsburgh's legendary alternative radio station continues to bring together the music, musicians and fans who dared to be different.
Some radio stations play music. Others change the way people listen to it.
For a generation of Pittsburgh music lovers, WXXP 100.7 FM was one of those stations.
This Thanksgiving weekend, the spirit of Pittsburgh's legendary alternative radio station returns to Mr. Smalls Theatre on Friday, November 27 and Saturday, November 28, for two nights celebrating the music, memories and friendships that have endured for nearly four decades.
Original WXXP DJs will be on hand both nights, reconnecting with the listeners who made the station such an unforgettable part of Pittsburgh's musical history.
When WXXP first hit the airwaves in 1986, it introduced Pittsburgh to an exciting new world of alternative music, championing artists like The Cure, The Smiths, R.E.M., New Order and The Clash while giving local bands a place alongside national and international acts.
Its famous slogan, "Dare to Be Different," became more than a catchphrase. It helped define a community of music lovers who found something on WXXP they simply couldn't find anywhere else.
Although the station's original run lasted just over two years, its impact has never faded. The 2015 WXXP reunion at Stage AE attracted more than 1,200 fans, proving that the connection between the station and its listeners remains as strong as ever.
Original WXXP DJ Paul Cramer, who has helped preserve the station's legacy through WXXP.com, reflects on that remarkable connection.
"We were on the air for such a short period of time, yet nearly 40 years later people still talk about WXXP like it was yesterday. We weren't just playing records. We were part of something much bigger than a radio station, and what's amazing is that the connection is still there."
Fellow original WXXP DJ Cris Winter remembers the excitement of those early days.
"There was something magical about WXXP. We had incredible music, passionate listeners and a Pittsburgh music scene filled with talent. We were discovering things together. Seeing everyone come back for these reunions reminds me just how special that time really was."
For Pittsburgh bands like The Affordable Floors, WXXP provided an invaluable opportunity to be heard.
"WXXP gave local bands a voice and made Pittsburgh a part of something happening all over the world," says Kirk Botula of The Affordable Floors. "It created a musical community that still exists today. Getting the bands, DJs and audience together again feels like coming home."
Rod Schwartz, organizer of the WXXP reunion concerts and band leader of Generation XX, believes the gatherings have always been about much more than nostalgia.
"There's an emotion in the room at these reunions that's almost impossible to describe. Old friends reconnect, musicians share the stage again, and hundreds of people sing along to songs that helped define a part of their lives. WXXP may have disappeared from the FM dial decades ago, but for the people who loved it, it never really went away."
The balcony has been privately rented for both nights.
