For over 20 years, Mr. Smalls Theater has been Pittsburgh’s go-to venue for live music and events. We are proud to finally announce Mr. Smalls Theatricals, a new subsidiary dedicated to bringing live theater and opera to Millvale.
Our first major production will be “Passion”, the Tony-Award winning one-act chamber opera from legendary composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Based on the novel Fosca by I. U. Tarchetti and the film Passione d'Amore directed by Ettore Scola, “Passion” first opened on Broadway in 1994 and received its London revival in 2010 at the Donmar Warehouse as part of Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday celebrations. This show is the winner of 4 Tony Awards including Best Music and Lyrics, Best Book, and Best Musical, features music and lyrics by the acclaimed Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Company, Follies, Into The Woods, Gypsy) and book by James Lapine (Falsettos, Into The Woods, Sunday In The Park With George).

We are thrilled to collaborate with Jen Saffron of the local Millvale business, Sprezzatura, to provide you with an Italian lunch & desserts to complete the ambiance of “Passion”. Reserve your Sprezzatura @ Smalls experience now! You'll be treated to a trip through the beautiful buffet featuring charcuterie meats, cheeses, fruit, crackers/breads, dips, caramelized onion tart, tortellini salad, lemony chickpeas, apple fennel slaw, carrot raisin rice salad, & more! (This menu is not recommended for those with severe nut allergies)
Those with lunch reservations will be admitted one hour early to the venue to enjoy their meal. Desserts will be sold a-la-carte after the performance for a special cocktail hour featuring an audience talk back with members of the cast and crew. Part of the proceeds will go toward Mr. Smalls Theatricals productions.
Stephen Sondheim's “Passion” revolves around Giorgio, a handsome Italian soldier who is separated from his beautiful mistress and becomes object of the obsessive love of Fosca, his Colonel’s chronically ill cousin, forcing him to re-evaluate his beliefs about the nature of love and attraction between two people.
Productions of this show are a rarity, receiving fewer productions than most of Sondheim's other work. However, in the wake of Stephen Sondheim’s death, it is more important than ever to show this incredibly intimate and personal work to the world. Its theme of love, enduring despite (or perhaps because of) the pain of loss is more relevant now than ever. The love shows through every note of the score and will resonate with you long after you leave the theatre.
