Sat 10/02 fun. with special guests Steel Train, Jarrod Gorbel 8:00pm All Ages
Iggy Pop was wrong. There is, in fact, fun. Fun is what happens when three extraordinarily talented musicians come together to create something altogether new and wonderful. Nate Ruess, late of The Format, has teamed up with ex-Anathallo multi-instrumentalist Andrew Dost and Steel Train’s Jack Antonoff, resulting in their ingenious debut, “AIM AND IGNITE.” The trio melds a stunning array of diverse inspirations – spanning Broadway to The Beach Boys, “NILSSON SCHMILSSON” to “PINKERTON” – into an irresistible collection of freewheeling pop songcraft. Songs like “Benson Hedges” and “All The Pretty Girls” are fit to burst with richly prolix lyricism and intricate melodic twists and turns, which provide plenty of room for Ruess’ distinctive vocals to soar. With “AIM AND IGNITE,” Fun have crafted something special indeed, a contemporary rethinking of classic 70s pop, where ornate arrangements and inspired orchestrations meet present-day rock ‘n’ roll.

Sun 10/03 Teenage Fanclub with special guests The Radar Brothers 8:00pm All Ages
While most bands are lucky to have one great songwriter, Teenage Fanclub are blessed with three, Raymond McGinley, Norman Blake and Gerard Love. "I suppose when you come to make a record, the way that we work, we can't really go off on a tangent because it's three people writing songs; it's not one person's vision," says Norman. "It's song-based, and all that we can do in terms of making it different is look at the way we arrange the songs. So we do try to make it different from album to album..." Also, the way we work after all these years has become intuitive, and you just get a feel for when someone comes in with a song. Gerry'll come in and play a song and outline how he wants it to work, but at that point, he'll give us the freedom to express ourselves in that context."

Fri 10/08 Anti-Flag with special guests Strike Anywhere, Riverboat Gamblers, The Flatliners 7:00pm All Ages
The seventh full-length Anti-Flag release (and first on Side One Dummy) starts off fast and furious with “Sodom, Gomorrah, Washington D.C. (Sheep in Shepherd’s Clothing)” as Chris #2 takes aim at those who use the Bible to control the masses, spitting out the lyrics with an urgency that makes his voice crack. If the album’s second track, “The Economy is Suffering…Let It Die,” isn’t nearly as reckless, it’s just as impassioned, recalling the more melodic moments on those first two albums by The Clash, as Justin Sane weighs in on the government bailouts of 2008, asking “Where are all the bailouts for the homeless and the poor?” It’s just the sort of question bands like Anti-Flag were born to ask. And there are plenty of those moments on “The People or the Gun.” Before they’re through, in fact, they’ve fired off a number of their most explosive political broadsides from the punk-rock trenches yet.

Tue 10/19 An Evening with Yonder Mountain String Band 8:30pm All Ages
Yonder Mountain String Band has always played music by its own set of rules. Bending bluegrass, rock and countless other influences that the band cites, Yonder has pioneered a sound of their own. With their traditional lineup of instruments, the band may look like a traditional bluegrass band at first glance but they’ve created their own music that transcends any genre. Dave Johnston points out “What could be more pure than making your own music.” Yonder’s sound cannot be classified purely as “bluegrass” or “string music” but rather it’s an original sound created from “looking at music from [their] own experiences and doing the best job possible.” The band continues to play by their own rules on their new record The Show.

Courtney Love's "anarchy violinist" returns to the stage and is keeping the spotlight all to herself. With appearances on Leno and Letterman, glossy magazine covers, and guest spots on the albums of such artists as Love, Otep, Billy Corgan, and TV's "Metalocalypse," under her corset strings, Emilie Autumn's devilishly dark lyrics, metal-shredding violin solos, and industrial-strength voice reinvent "gothic" for the masses, and goths have never had so much fun.

Thu 10/21 An Evening with Umphrey's McGee 9:00pm All Ages
Founded in 1997 in the shadows of the Golden Dome of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, Umphrey's McGee soon made Chicago home base, and set their sights on becoming one of the premier live acts in today's touring circuit. Over the course of the last ten years, the band has performed at festivals such as Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, and continues to sell out shows in the nation's premier venues coast to coast. They have toured Europe multiple times and performed at Japan's Fuji Rock Festival in 2006. As their sound evolves with every passing show, the live concerts sold on their expansive music archive site UMLive.net continue to be in high demand by their hungry fan base. The second decade of Umphrey's McGee is fueled with Mantis in the tank, and the band shows no signs of letting up.

Fri 10/22 The Walkmen with special guests Japandroids, ARMS 8:00pm All Ages
The Walkmen is a rock band formed in New York in 2000. In the late 90's, the guys constructed an analogue recording studio in an abandoned Nash Rambler factory in west Harlem, where they self-recorded their first album, Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone. Three of the members now reside in Brooklyn, and two have moved on to the cheaper pastures of Philadelphia. The band has released 4 albums of original material--including 2008's You and Me, which still sounds as fresh as the day it was conceived. The band has travelled extensively around the world in the last 8 years, but has always called New York home. They are currently in New York recording a 5th album, which is slated for release in early 2010.

Mon 10/25 Rebelution with special guests Zion I, Tribal Seeds 8:00pm All Ages
Hailing from Santa Barbara, California, Rebelution has developed into the front runner for grassroots, independent and touring driven music groups representing the Cali-Reggae scene. Originally formed in 2004, members Eric Rachmany (vocals / guitar,) Rory Carey (keyboards,) Wesley Finley (drums,) and Marley D. Williams (bass) met in college, while residing in Isla Vista, a popular beachside community in Santa Barbara. It was there that the seeds to Rebelution’s future would be planted-- and would instill their kick back, “worry free” vibes, catchy refrain, and optimistic, inspiring, and engaging music that would leave their listeners with the sense that they have the power to make this world a better place.

Tue 10/26 Phantogram with special guest Josiah Wolf 8:00pm All Ages
Phantogram's music sounds like it's made by a band from the city. Electronic loops, hip-hop beats, shoegaze, soul, pop — each finds its way into their songs. Unexpectedly, the band doesn't live and work in a major urban center, but rather calls the town of Saratoga Springs, NY (population 26,186) home. Despite the cultural influence of local Skidmore College (where fellow beat-experimenters Ratatat formed) and a relatively small scene of adventurous musicians and listeners, Saratoga isn't exactly teeming with fans of J. Dilla, My Bloody Valentine or Serge Gainsbourg.
