Sun 08/01 Built To Spill with special guests Fauxbois 8:00pm All Ages
Three and a half years in the making, the efforts of writing and recording THERE IS NO ENEMY led Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch to wonder whether this would be the last album he ever makes. As his wife, I watched him work, pouring hour after hour , day after day into writing. Song lyrics were labored over then thrown in the trash, guitar parts revised again (and again). A musician and artist like Doug edits far more than he keeps. For over twenty years, Doug Martsch has been writing and recording music. Built to Spill members Brett Nelson (bass), Scott Plouf (drums) Jim Roth (guitar), and Brett Netson (guitar) have all been musicians for two decades. That adds up to more than a century. Doug’s strong aesthetic combines with the band members’ mix of approaches to create an aural topography. Doug sets course and navigates. Each member of Built to Spill comes to the music with a different set of expectations and ideals.

Mon 08/09 mewithoutYou with special guests Murder By Death, Buried Beds 8:00pm All Ages
“I do not exist,” mewithoutYou frontman Aaron Weiss mutters to open the band's third full-length, Brother, Sister, setting the tone for an album that explores philosophical, spiritual and interpersonal relationships with equal aplomb. However, while Weiss has become known for his stream-of-consciousness lyrics communicated via his half-sung/half-shouted vocals, Brother, Sister is a huge progression for Weiss personally, as well as the rest of the Philadelphia-based band—guitarist Michael Weiss, guitarist Christopher Kleinberg, bassist Greg Jehanian and drummer Rickie Mazzotta. Oh, and it also has the potential to finally break the underground's best-kept secret wide open. In a musical landscape dominated by genre divisions and marketing campaigns, Brother, Sister is simply an album made by five people who create art without any limitations—and that's what makes it so important. While the album retains the band's instantly recognizable post-hardcore sound, Weiss' vocals and the implementation of atypical instrumentation are the most instantly recognizable shifts from 2004's Catch For Us The Foxes.

Thu 08/19 O'Brother with special guests The Felix Culpa, In The Wake Of Giants, The Scattered Calm 7:00pm All Ages
When the music of O’Brother hits your ears, you feel their heaviness like an anchor that pulls you down into the sea. Their sound will encompass your being and drown your soul with sonic waves. In 2009, the band previewed their potential with “The Death of Day” on Favorite Gentlemen Recordings. Now with several more miles under their belts, the song writing has matured with added depth. This Atlanta five-piece are ready to take it the next level by stepping up on the foundation they have laid for years. Making Thrice’s top ten list to end 2009 and a full U.S. tour to start 2010 with Manchester Orchestra (which came here this past March), O’Brother is ready to make you a part of their family.

Mon 08/23 Matisyahu with special guest Dub Trio 8:00pm All Ages
Few artists make an impact as complete as the one Matisyahu made with his Top 40 hit “King Without a Crown”: Here was a true original, the song announced-a Hasidic Jewish musician from New York City singing reggae songs about his religious devotion. Fans responded to this one-of-a-kind voice, too, driving Youth, Matisyahu’s Grammy-nominated 2006 studio disc, to the top spot on Billboard’s reggae albums chart. That album, as well as Matisahu’s previous recording Live at Stubb’s, went Gold. True originals, though, don’t stay put for long, and on his bold new album, Light, 29-year-old Matisyahu proves that there’s much more to his artistry than might initially meet the eye. “As my musical tastes have grown I have been re-discovering my sound and my voice,” he says.

Wed 08/25 An Acoustic Evening with Jon Anderson (The Voice of YES) 8:00pm All Ages
That voice. It punches through the stratosphere, down along a sunbeam, and straight into your heart. Jon Anderson has been the lead singer of Yes, one of the most long-lived and successful rock acts in history, for more than three decades (give or take a few respites when the drama got too thick). Perhaps more than any other element in this progressive rock flagship, it is Anderson's vocals that instantly identify what you're hearing as Yes Music, a complex, giddy, positive amalgamation of rock's fire and classical music's grace. English folk, American pop, and plugged-in jazz also rear their heads on album oriented FM-radio staples like "I've Seen All Good People," "Owner of a Lonely Heart," and "Long Distance Runaround." - Dennis Cook, Jambase.com
